Monrovia: The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has expressed deep disappointment in the Liberian government’s failure to adequately address corruption, despite the existence of laws and institutions designed to combat corrupt practices.

Anderson Miamen , Executive Director of CENTAL highlighted that Liberia has implemented key anti-corruption measures over the years, including the establishment of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and the General Auditing Commission (GAC). However, corruption is on the increase, with a lack of strong presidential will thus undermining these efforts.

“Corruption continues to be a major challenge in Liberia due to insufficient commitment from the highest levels of government,” said Mr. Miamen. He described the situation as a “stumbling block” to the country’s progress and reminded President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of his pledge in January 2024 to adopt a “no business as usual” approach to tackling corruption.

Miamen criticized President Boakai’s slow response to accountability issues, accusing the administration of turning a blind eye to officials involved in corrupt practices. He also condemned the government for failing to enforce asset declaration laws, noting that over 70% of presidential appointees have not declared their assets as required by law.

“The president is yet to warn, suspend, or dismiss these non-compliant officials, which is highly troubling,” he added. Despite these criticisms, Mr. Miamen acknowledged some positive actions by the government, including the removal of ghost names from payrolls, the establishment of a war and economic crimes court, and the suspension and dismissal of certain officials implicated in corruption.

“These actions signify a level of political will against corruption and abuse of power,” he said. CENTAL, a non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering integrity and governance reform, emphasized the need for stronger leadership and accountability to address corruption effectively in Liberia. The organization urged the government to uphold its commitments and take decisive actions to restore public trust.
