“BOAKAI’S GOVERNMENT HAS APPOINTED WOMEN BEYOND THE 30% QUOTA” GENDER MINISTER KOLLIE DISCLOSES AT IWD

Monrovia: Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Gbeme Horace Kollie has announced that President Joseph Boakai has appointed women beyond the thirty precent 30% quota.

Minister Horace Kollie highlighted remarkable achievement women of Liberia have made reflecting on the progress globally. IWD is a day set aside to recognize and honor the tireless efforts women across the world made in the strive for Gender Equality reflecting on the progress made in advancing women and girls rights.

Observed by every member state in alignment with historical and national traditions more than 30% women are serving as Ministers, deputy Ministers. “This trend continues even at the superintendent level, where women make up 40% superintendent appointed”.

The theme for this IWD is” Accelerate Action” with National Theme “Accelerate Action to end Gender based violence and Achieve Gender equality in Liberia.

The Minister emphasized the National policy Dialogue platform that has already been launched under the Liberia Women Empowerment project noting it will address policy related constraints that are hindering gender equality and women empowerment

“Under this project we have three pivotal legal instruments which includes Female Genital Mutilation (FGM ) , the Elections Law of Liberia and the women Legal Aid Bills ” she added

The Gender Minister was speaking at the celebration of International Women’s Day commemorated on March 8, 2025, held at the Ellen Johnson Ministerial Complex in congo town.

Also speaking, Cllr. Tonieh A. Talery chairperson of the Women Human Rights Defenders of Liberia urged Women and girls to Accelerate Action to end inequality describing gender inequality as the root cause of violence that limit the voices of women and girls around the world “We must Act We cannot afford to remain complacent, we cannot allow this injustice continue, we must ensure that survivors of Gender based violence have access to justice with positive results” Cllr Talery noted.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia Madam Esther Yango. David has reaffirmed her organization’s unwavering commitment to advancing for the right of women and girls In Liberia acknowledging the urgent need for collective Acton.

“We are Committed and at the full front to end Gender based violence in Liberia, we will continue to lead advocacy in the fight for Gender equality for full implementation ” she said . at the same time, One UN System Resident Madam Christine Umutoni called on every women to take actions in strengthening the system for women and girls rights “Is important for us all to take action, action in decisions Making, action to remove Obstacles or barriers and action to maintain women full participation, together let us stay strong to making rights Equal” she added.
