Jewel Taylor Goes to Jail in Multi-million Dollars Drug Case

Monrovia, August 25, 2026 — The Monrovia City Court on today jailed former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor at the Monrovia Central Prison, also known as South Beach, in connection with an alleged transnational drug trafficking network that investigators say used her influence as vice president to make Liberia a transit point for cocaine trafficking in the region.
Her imprisonment followed a decision by Monrovia City Court Judge L. Ben Barco to deny a request by her lawyers to allow her to remain hospitalized while undergoing trial.
The defense argued that Taylor was still recovering after she was admitted at GIMS hospital while in police custody. The prosecution, however, objected, maintaining that medical records showed she was medically fit to be transferred to prison.
According to the Joint Special Investigation Team, Taylor allegedly received a total of US$135,000 on three occasions from individuals linked to a drug cartel.
Investigators allege that Taylor received US$45,000 in 2021 during a trip to Dubai, another US$75,000 from Sheikh Bashiru Kante in support of her Jewel Star-Fish Foundation, and US$15,000 in August 2026.
Taylor was arrested on August 19 in connection with an alleged US$317 million drug case while attempting to leave the country. She was detained by police for about 24 hours before reportedly suffering an asthma attack.
The charges against her include importation of controlled drugs, unlicensed exportation of controlled drugs and substances, unlicensed sale, trading in transit and transportation of controlled substances, illicit trafficking, criminal conspiracy, criminal facilitation, and criminal solicitation.
She has denied the allegations and rejects any connection to the drug cartel.
Taylor is the first prominent opposition figure and politician to be arrested in connection with the investigation since it began.
Her lawyer, Findley Karnga, has described her imprisonment as an injustice and vowed to pursue further legal action in the interest of his client.
Meanwhile, prosecutors have expressed confidence in their ability to present substantial evidence against Taylor in court.
Jewel Howard-Taylor is a long-standing Liberian politician. She served as First Lady to former President Charles Taylor, represented Bong County in the Liberian Senate for two terms, and served as vice president under former President George Weah from 2018 to 2024.
