AWLN-Liberia Hosts Dialogue to Advance Women’s Land Rights

December 2, 2025

Careysburg, Montserrado: In a renewed push to strengthen women’s access to land in Liberia, the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Liberia Chapter is set to host a one-day dialogue on women’s land rights on December 2, 2025, in Careysburg, Montserrado County.

The gathering aims to confront the long-standing barriers that women continue to face in claiming, owning, and making decisions over land barriers that persist despite the passage of major land-related laws.

Through this dialogue, AWLN-Liberia hopes to highlight the experiences of women navigating land ownership, inheritance disputes, and community governance issues. Since the adoption of laws such as the Land Rights Act of 2018, the Decedents Estate Law, and the Criminal Conveyance Law, women’s groups and civil society actors have pushed for stronger enforcement and broader public awareness.

The upcoming dialogue seeks to build on that momentum by bringing together key voices and stakeholders. About forty participants are expected to attend, including women farmers, widows, traditional leaders, government representatives, civil society groups, legal experts, and members of the media.

Their discussions will center on identifying practical solutions to improve land governance, strengthen policy implementation, and empower women to confidently claim and defend their land rights. Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Gbeme Horace Kollie, will deliver the keynote address.

Additional remarks will come from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Justice, and the Liberia Land Authority institutions whose roles are crucial in ensuring gender-responsive land reforms. Since its establishment on December 18, 2019, AWLN-Liberia has been guided by a five-year Strategic Plan aimed at elevating the leadership and influence of Liberian women.

The network continues to champion women’s political participation, peacebuilding, legal reform, and mentorship for emerging female leaders. As the dialogue convenes in Careysburg, AWLN-Liberia reaffirms its commitment to advancing women’s rights and strengthening their role in Liberia’s development and decision-making processes.
