Nimba County – The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has officially launched and signed the Consumer Protection Regulations (CPR).

The activity took place recently during a high-profile ceremony at Jackie’s Guesthouse in Ganta City, Nimba County. Providing an overview of the regulations, LTA Commissioner Patrick Honnah highlighted their development through extensive nationwide consultations with telecommunications providers, consumers, and key stakeholders.

“The CPR aims to address deceptive practices by service providers, safeguard consumer’s privacy, and ensure consent is obtained before disclosing personal information,” Commissioner Honnah explained. The new regulations, which will take effect in 60 days, require service providers to resolve consumer complaints promptly and transparently.

It is designed to enhance protections and improve accountability in the telecommunications sector, fostering a more reliable service environment. To support implementation, Commissioner Honnah announced the establishment of a dedicated short code, 2244, enabling consumers to report unresolved complaints directly to the LTA.

However, consumers must first seek resolution with their service providers before escalating issues to the authority. The launch event drew a diverse audience, including LTA Commissioners, Acting Chairperson Hon. Abdullah L Kamara, Hon. Sekou Kromah, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, and Hon. Molly Kamara, Senior Economic Advisor to President Boakai. Over 400 participants attended, representing groups such as the marketing association, motorcycle union, high school students, and residents of Nimba County.

The program featured live discussions, cultural performances, and the official signing of the CPR, marking a significant milestone in strengthening consumer rights in Liberia’s telecommunications sector. The LTA emphasized its commitment to ensuring consumer empowerment and transparency, setting the stage for a more consumer-focused telecom industry across the nation.
