WONGOSOL Congratulates the Government of Liberia on Historic UN Security Council Victory

June 4, 2025

Monrovia: The Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), representing a national network of over 250 women-led and women-focused civil society organizations, extends warm congratulations to the Government and people of Liberia on the country’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term.

According to WONGOSOL, the achievement is a historic testament to Liberia’s growing leadership on the international stage and a proud moment for a country that has emerged from decades of conflict and invested deeply in peacebuilding, reconciliation, and inclusive governance.

”WONGOSOL celebrates this victory not only as a diplomatic milestone but as a renewed opportunity to advance gender equality, transitional justice, and sustainable peace”.

As the primary Organization responsible for maintaining international peace and security, the Security Council provides a vital platform for Liberia to influence global discourse and decisions on conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and post-conflict recovery.

Even more significant, this win comes as Liberia; one of the founding members of the United Nations in 1945, finally secures a seat at the world’s highest decision-making body on peace and security.

It is a proud and symbolic moment of how far we’ve come, and how ready we are to lead. WONGOSOL calls on the Government of Liberia to use this seat to center the voices and needs of women and girls in all peace and security deliberations, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and subsequent WPS resolutions.

WONGOSOL noted that Liberia’s presence on the Council must also reflect the country’s own unresolved transitional justice agenda. ”As advocates for justice, accountability, and healing for survivors of conflict-related abuses, we urge the Government to use this international platform to reinforce its domestic commitments to establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court and implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)”. Adding,” Justice delayed is justice denied.

The world is watching, and this Council seat provides a rare and powerful opportunity for Liberia to demonstrate leadership by advancing transitional justice as a cornerstone of lasting peace”. WONGOSOL reaffirms its commitment to working alongside government institutions, civil society, and international partners to ensure that Liberia’s tenure on the Council is inclusive, accountable, and responsive to the needs of its people, especially women, youth, and survivors of past conflict.

”Congratulations to the Government and people of Liberia! This victory is not only a reflection of our diplomatic maturity but a call to action to deepen our commitments to gender equality, justice, and sustainable peace”
