Nyehn Town Women Praise Government for Transformative Empowerment Support

Todee, Montserrado County: Women of Nyehn Town in Todee District, rural Montserrado County, are celebrating what they describe as a “new chapter of opportunity” as they commend the Government of Liberia for its wide-reaching empowerment initiatives.
According to the women, the support ranging from livelihood assistance to skills-building programs is transforming households, strengthening community resilience, and giving them renewed hope for economic independence.
The empowerment efforts fall under the Liberia Women Empowerment Project, launched in July 2023 to “advance the social, economic, of women in Liberia.” The project is led by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP), with technical support from Plan International Liberia and several partner organizations.
Designed to address structural barriers such as poverty, gender inequality, exclusion, and limited access to education and essential services, the project uses a holistic, community-driven model to uplift vulnerable women within six Counties only through livelihood grants. Madam Leesay, Secretary-General of one of the beneficiary women’s groups, described their past struggles as a “hand-to-mouth” existence before the project reached their community.
“We are truly grateful to the government and its partners. We had no financial support and depended fully on our husbands for everything. But now, with this financial and moral empowerment, we can take care of our basic needs. Our businesses have grown and improved. We are so happy,” she said. Similarly, Joyce M. Dorliae, Chairlady of the Fairness Village Saving Association, called the initiative “a God-sent project and a life saver.” “Oh God, thank you so much for this government.
This is our first time receiving such an amount S$4,000 to improve our businesses and our lives, along with new knowledge. We are grateful to the implementing partners,” she expressed, as her group chanted, “One shot for the Government and its implementing partners!” World Bank Country Manager Madam Georgia Wallen, expressed deep excitement after listening to the women’s testimonies, commending their commitment and responsible use of the resources.
“I am glad to hear these beautiful stories. Empowerment starts small but grows bigger with commitment. You are positive transformers, moving from zero to hero,” she said. Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gbeme Horace Kollie, urged the women to remain focused and accountable to uphold national dignity.
She emphasized President Joseph N. Boakai’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of women in Liberia. Minister Kollie also reminded beneficiaries that the project is funded by a World Bank loan to the Government of Liberia. “Let us be focused and use every dollar for its intended purpose.
As the government washes our backs, let us not forget to wash our stomachs,” she cautioned, while appreciating the World Bank for its continuous support. She further lauded Plan International Liberia for collaborating with the government to implement such an important initiative. Plan International Liberia’s Country Director,
Madam Mariam Murray encouraged the women to continue demonstrating dedication and hard work so their success stories can inspire expansion of the project to neighboring communities. Plan International in Liberia International has been an active international NGO for decades and operates a country office in Liberia implementing child- and girl-centered development programs. They have also been selected as Lead Service Provider since (Sept 2024).
