President Boakai Concludes National Observance of Liberia’s 179th Independence Anniversary with Major Infrastructure Milestones
Salayea District, Lofa County, July 30, 2026: His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has concluded the national observance of Liberia’s 179th Independence Anniversary with the dedication of the 81-kilometer Gbarnga–Salayea Road Corridor and the groundbreaking for the 50-kilometer Salayea–Konia Road, marking a fitting conclusion to several days of national celebrations and development-focused engagements.
The official Independence observance, hosted in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County, brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional and religious leaders, youth, members of the security services, the private sector, development partners, and citizens from across and outside Liberia to commemorate the nation’s 179 years of independence.
Throughout the observance, Liberians participated in activities that celebrated the country’s history, culture, faith, and national identity while highlighting the Government’s efforts to improve infrastructure, expand access to electricity, strengthen local governance, empower young people, promote tourism and sports, and advance inclusive national development.
The official Independence Day ceremonies featured the traditional hoisting of the National Flag, the arrival and inspection of the troops by the President, the rendering of honors to the National Colors, and a grand military pass in review, reflecting the patriotism, discipline, and unity of the Liberian people.
The observance also included intercessory and thanksgiving services (both Christian and Muslim), youth engagement, cultural and entertainment activities, community events, and an Independence Day Reception, all reinforcing the spirit of national unity and shared purpose.
Bringing the national observance to a close, President Boakai dedicated the newly completed 81-kilometer Gbarnga–Salayea Road Corridor and broke ground for the Salayea–Konia Road, describing roads as critical drivers of economic growth, national integration, and improved access to education, healthcare, markets, and other essential services.
The Government of Liberia extended sincere appreciation to the people of Grand Bassa County for successfully hosting the 179th Independence Anniversary celebrations, as well as to all citizens, institutions, development partners, and stakeholders whose contributions ensured a peaceful and memorable national observance.
As Liberia commemorates 179 years of independence, the Government calls on all Liberians to remain united in purpose, strengthen the bonds of peace and patriotism, and work together to build a more prosperous, inclusive, and resilient nation for generations to come.
