Bong County: In an effort to have an ‘Environmental Conservation and Peaceful Coexistence’ among residents of Bong County, a call has been made by the county’s Information Officer for residents to prioritize good environmental practices over destruction of the environment and disunity amongst themselves.

In a media engagement with journalists on Thursday, October 31, 2024, in Gbarnga, Christian Kangbo emphasized the importance of preserving the county’s natural resources and its rich cultural heritage for future and holistic use over self-benefits. Mr. Kangbo told residents that the county’s forests are not only meant to provide valuable habitat for wildlife but also contribute to climate regulation, clean air, and water for the community.

He is, at the same time, calling on residents of the county to refrain from engaging in violence against environmental laws and instead focus on protecting and promoting the environment, including peaceful coexistence within the county. “Tourism is the backbone of any country’s economy. We have a beautiful county with many historic sites and natural wonders.

But if we continue to destroy our forests and engage in violence, we will not have anything to show to tourists,” Kangbo said. Additionally, Mr. Kangbo reminded residents of the county that a peaceful environment is essential for tourism and economic development. According to him, Bong County is focused on promoting tourism and attracting investors; as such, every citizen needs to play their part in preserving the county’s natural beauty and further promoting a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

“We cannot attract tourists if our county is known for violence and conflict. Let us work together to resolve our differences peacefully and create a welcoming environment for visitors,” he stated. The conversation and maintenance of Liberia’s natural resources and a conducive environment for all living organisms are key pillars outlined in goal #15 of the United Nations’ 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Goal#15 of the SDGs states that Life on Land must be protected, restored, and promoted for sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, the sustainable management of forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss.
