Monrovia: A devastating gas explosion at the MIRA Gas Company, located in the CEMECO Community, has left one person dead and more than 21 others seriously injured. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) confirmed the incident, citing an oxygen-related explosion as the likely cause.

The deceased has been identified as a Lebanese national, while the injured victims are suffering from severe burns and respiratory trauma are receiving treatment at the JFK medical facilities. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism’s regular press briefing, NDMA Executive Director Hon. Ansu Dulleh expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy.

“This has caused me so much sadness, and I’m feeling very bad about the situation,” Dulleh stated. “According to medical reports, while many of the injured are expected to recover, some may suffer permanent damage including the inability to walk again, loss of eyesight, and long-term respiratory complications.”

In the wake of the explosion, the NDMA has launched an emergency response effort, reaching out to the families of the victims with medical and humanitarian support. Relief supplies and counseling services orifice also being provided.

Director Dulleh condemned the incident as a result of gross negligence and called for swift legal action. “This is the same kind of negligence we saw months ago in Bong County, which took many lives. We cannot continue to allow these preventable disasters to occur,” he emphasized. “I am calling for the immediate arrest of the owner of Meri Gas Company. Accountability is essential.”

Authorities have begun a full-scale investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the NDMA is urging all gas and oxygen distribution facilities nationwide to comply strictly with safety standards and regulatory protocols.

In a broader appeal, Hon. Dulleh called on citizens, local leaders, and community organizations to take part in disaster prevention efforts. “We are urging all Liberians to join us in the fight against these national disasters by raising awareness through communities, radio programs, and other media. Prevention starts with education.”

As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely, mourning the loss and praying for the recovery of the injured.
