Monrovia: Women from across Liberia under the banner “Women of Liberia” has launched a fundraising campaign for Nimba County senatorial candidate for the by-election, Edith Gongle-Weh titled “She Deserves a Seat at the Table”
The reason for the fundraiser campaign is to raise $10,000 United States Dollars in cash to provide missive support for candidate Gongle-Weh in the upcoming by-election scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Nimba County.
Reading the statement on behalf of the women, the head of the Community Health Initiative Madam Naomi Tulay-Solanke said Madam Edith Gongle-Weh is the only female candidate in Nimba by-election.
“We believe that Gongle-Weh is standing not just for herself but for every girl who dreams of leadership, for every woman who has been told “you can’t,” and for every citizen who believes democracy should reflect all”.
Acknowledging the barriers, Tulay-Solanke recounted what usually happened when women are excluded from decisions that shape their lives, pointing to laws, budgets and leadership that don’t protect and reflect women.
Reflecting on this campaign, she mentioned harmful online attacks, traditional power used to exclude, as challenges women continue to face today.
Edith Gongloe-Weh is a former Superintendent of Nimba County and has contested the senatorial seat in Nimba more than three times now. “This is why we are launching the “She Deserves A Seat” campaign movement to ensure Edith has the support, resources, and protection she needs to campaign safely and win”.
We are raising funds, mobilizing our networks, and calling on all Liberians women, men, young people, traditional leaders, civil society, and faith-based groups to stand with us. This is not about backing a candidate because she’s a woman. It’s about backing a leader who is qualified, committed, and courageous. It’s about showing the world that Nimba and Liberia are ready for change”
The Women in their statement echoed Liberia cannot move forward if women are left behind. Nothing, they will not wait for a crisis before action is taken but are preparing now because every election is a moment of risk, as well as a moment of possibility. “We are also calling on male allies across the country to raise their voices. Gender equality is not a women’s issue. It is a democracy issue. It is about fairness, peace, and progress. Real men make space. Real leaders lift others up”. Meanwhile, Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine Founder of CMB Law Group remarking at the launch stressed the importance of supporting women. According to Cllr. Brumskine, supporting women are of more interest to men, children than women.
“But I’m going to tell you why we are supporting her. Why we are standing for women. We are doing it for our sons, our husbands, before we even talk about our daughters. You may say, but why? How? How are we willing to do this for the men?, Let me tell you why. Not for us, it’s for you. Ever since the state ever started, if you look at countries in Africa, some of the most well-led countries, the richest countries, the countries with the best government structures, are countries where women are leading or women have equal say as men”.
