Bong: The Liberia National Police has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with Cottington University to launch a transformative academic and police training program.
This initiative aims to enhance capacity development within Liberia’s security sector by combining higher education with professional police training, fostering a more educated and youth-driven force.
The official signing ceremony, held on the campus of Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County, drew national and local officials, university faculty members, and representatives from security institutions.
In his remarks, Inspector General Gregory O.W. Coleman highlighted the partnership as a pivotal step toward modernizing the LNP. “The launch of the LNP Cottington University Capacity Development Program is more than a recruitment effort it is a commitment to building a professional, resilient, and service-oriented police force,” he stated.
He emphasized that the collaboration between public institutions and academia is vital in solving manpower gaps and driving lasting national impact. Under the program, 20 top candidates will be selected through a rigorous vetting process and enrolled at Cottington University, ensuring that Liberia’s security forces are equipped with the knowledge, ethics, and practical skills necessary for modern policing.
Deputy Inspector General of Police for Training and Manpower Development, Hon. Sadatu L.M. Reeves, stressed the broader significance of the program: “This is more than workforce development it is a bold reform strategy aimed at addressing critical challenges within the LNP. We particularly encourage young Liberians, especially women, to take advantage of this opportunity.”
As part of the ceremony, a song composed by university students calling on the police to safeguard peace was played. In response, IGP Coleman reaffirmed the LNP’s dedication to protecting the country and ensuring stability. IGP Coleman assured that successful students who progress through multiple semesters will have the chance to be placed on payroll as they balance work and academics.
Additionally, he emphasized that the partnership would serve as an incubator for not only the LNP but other agencies, including the Fire Service and Liberia Immigration Service. Cottington University President, Dr. Romelle A. Horton, described the agreement as historic, symbolizing safety, justice, and the rule of law. “This partnership provides not only infrastructure but vital knowledge that will help ensure national security,” she stated. Commending the LNP’s vision, she added, “I will keep your feet to the fire.” She emphasized that the success of the program will be measured by lives saved and bridges built within communities.
