Monrovia: Motorcyclists threaten another protest Action Monday after house committee on transport fail to give them audience on capitol The Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia has threatened another protest action on Monday after the House’s committee on Transport allegedly failed to give them audience on capitol.
Addressing the press minutes after the Motorcyclists were allegedly denied by the House’s committee on Transport headed by Rep Momo Siafa Kpoto, the motorcyclists in an angry mood and tone noted that they will come outside on Monday and will not rest until their issues are addressed.
“After waiting for three hours at the capitol building with no courtesy, sadly we were told that the meeting with the Committee on Transport will not be held again because they were meeting with Western Cluster” “We believe our lawmakers should be representing our interest with the hope that our issues will be resolve, but they just proved to us that they respect the white man more than their own citizens, it is shameful and embarrassing to see”
On Monday March 3, 2025, the Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union took on the streets protesting after police ban which prevent all motorcyclists from using major streets in Monrovia.
The Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia is calling on the international community to intervene as this issue around the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists lives The president of the union Trokon Gray noted that they came on the invitation of the legislature after a petition was presented to them during their peaceful protest on Monday March 3, 2025 with three major counts at which time we were told to come today, Wednesday March 5, 2025.
Gray said their three counts included lifting the ban on motorcyclists which he described as unconstitutional, releasing of 2000 bikes that were taken away by the Liberia National Police and wanting justice for the motorcyclist that was killed in slipway. “Why should police get checkpoints all over the place as though we are fighting? We see this as harassment and embarrassment to not just the Motorcyclists but a thread to the citizens”
Recently, the Federation of Motorcycle and Tricycle Union of Liberia (M-FOMTUL) in a statement accused the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) of instigating a planned protest through an unauthorized group, the “Supreme Motorcycle and Tricycle Union of Liberia.”
The union alleges that the planned demonstration is politically motivated and aimed at creating instability thereby calling on all motorcyclists and tricyclists to reject any attempt to use them as tools for political disruption, “This protest is not about the welfare of motorcyclists and tricyclists rather, it is a politically orchestrated plot by individuals linked to the CDC’s youth wing, we strongly condemn this act and urge all riders to remain peaceful and law-abiding”, Mr. John Kenyon – President of M-FOMTUL noted.
Also, the institution responsible for regulating transportation in Liberia, the Ministry of Transport issued a statement upon hearing about the group protest clarifying that the group under the banner the “Supreme Motorcyclists Union” was not a registered union under the Ministry’s jurisdiction therefore, it has no official status or authority to operate as union.
The Ministry since described the group as self-proclaimed and urged all other motorcyclists under the banner to refrain from impersonating to avoid future embarrassment
