Pres.  Boakai Highlights Liberia’s Rich Natural Resources at US-African Leaders Summit With Pres. Donald Trump

Washington: President Joseph Boakai in a notable diplomatic engagement with U.S. President, Donald J. Trump and African Leaders has highlighted Liberia’s rich endowment of natural resources calling for strengthened collaboration and partnership in the mineral sector.

The summit attended by five African heads of state is aimed at strengthening ties between the United States and key African nations which is being focused on diplomacy, trade, security, investment as well as strengthening trade relationships, enhancing regional security, and tackling climate change issues that are critical to the future of both Africa and the United States.

President Boakai’s visit comes at a time of heightened interest in African affairs in Washington, as the U.S. seeks to improve its ties with the continent amid growing global competition and investment from other nations, particularly China emphasizing the importance of sustainable economic development, governance, and cooperation between the U.S. and African nations. “This summit represents a pivotal opportunity for African leaders to work collaboratively with the U.S. to address shared challenges,” he said in a statement upon his arrival.

He explained that “Liberia has vast mineral potential, and as a good and trusted friend, we are seeking support to conduct comprehensive mineral surveys. This is vital to unlocking sustainable growth and mutual economic benefits,”

President Boakai added “Mr. President, we recently celebrated your 249th Independence Anniversary at your Embassy in Monrovia, we thank you for the opportunity to be here today, Liberia has been a longstanding friend of the United States, and we believe in your vision of making America great again. Our partnership stretches far back, and we stand with you on economic diplomacy and commercial cooperation.” Liberia’s President noted.

The summit also provided a platform for dialogue on health initiatives, where the Liberian Leader reiterated Liberia’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare system post-Ebola and coping with the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Liberian Leader also called for deeper American engagement in Liberia’s development journey, especially in the areas of investment, infrastructure, and security cooperation.

“We would like to see increased American investment in Liberia. We believe the United States can play a key role in advancing peace and security within our region, and we are committed to working closely with you in that regard,” he added.

The President reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to peace, stability, and democratic governance, citing the country’s progress in holding successive democratic elections and maintaining regional stability.

“We are fortunate to have enjoyed relative peace and democratic continuity. Our country is steadily cooling down after years of conflict, and we are proud of the democratic path we continue to follow,” he said.

President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s efforts to foster a stable political environment and encouraged increased U.S. investment in sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure, which are essential for Liberia’s development.
