Monrovia: Grand Bassa fifth District Representative Thomas Goshua has written the plenary of the House Representations to summon suspended Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Bryant McGill and Police IG Gregory Coleman over allegations of rape involving a 14year old girl

Rep. Goshua communication expressed deep concern over what he described as the government’s slow response to the allegations emphasizing that rape remains a non-billable offense under the Liberian law, therefore, it allegation deserves urgent attention and transparency from authorities.

The Deputy Minister of Youth and sports Bryant McGill was accused of sexually molesting a 14-year old girl which led to his suspension by President Joseph Boakai pending investigation.  But police have maintained that there is no concrete evidence to arrest the deputy minister. The suspect is a member of the ruling Unity Party

“Since the news of the alleged rape by the Deputy Minister, much has not been done to bring the alleged perpetrator to justice, the outcome of the matter has not been made clear to the Liberian people we represent.” Goshua letter noted.

The Grand Bassa lawmaker called on the Inspector General of Police and the Minister of Youth and Sports to appear before the full plenary of the House to provide clarity on the ongoing investigation.

Rep. Goshua further noted that the victim and her family continue to suffer emotional distress and stigmatization due to the unresolved nature of the case, stressing that failure to address the matter promptly could amount to a denial of justice, “Until this matter is resolved, I’m afraid that justice is being denied,” he added.

The Liberia National Police said based on thorough investigation conducted by the Ministry of Justice there is no evidence so far to link the suspect to the alleged rape involving the 14-year-old girl. Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman said the final step in the process would be a DNA test, which has not yet been conducted due to technical challenges. He advised citizens against allowing emotions to interfere with the investigative process, noting the police will remain professional and impartial.

“The following facts and circumstances have established probable cause, the 14-year-old girl or victim said she was raped, a medical report supports penetration or injury, she identified J. Bryant McGill as the perpetrator, the police have video footage related to the crime. that’s enough for probable cause, even without the video footage, the police do not need DNA or trial level-proof to make an arrest”.

The rape allegation and handling by the police have led to public condemnation, with civil society organizations and human rights advocates pointing accusing fingers to the police of being partial in case.
