District #4 Representative, Michael Thomas has written plenary, seeking the establishment of Paynesville Comprehensive Referral Hospital (PCRH).
According to the lawmaker, the proposed hospital is intended to serve as a major medical facility in the City of Paynesville, providing treatment for human illnesses, trauma care, maternity services, and other public health needs.
Rep Thomas cited the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which empowers the National Legislature to enact laws creating government agencies, commissions, and institutions, including medical centers for the care of persons suffering from illness or disabilities.
In his communication to plenary, the District #5 Representative highlighted serious challenges facing the Duport Road Public Health Center, noting that the facility is currently operating beyond its capacity.
“Honorable Speaker, Honorable Deputy Speaker, and Distinguished Colleagues, the Duport Road Public Health Center is attending to more than one hundred and fifty (150) patients daily,” he stated.
He further disclosed that 60 percent of the patients are pregnant women, 15 percent are trauma cases, while 25 percent suffer from other illnesses. According to him, the situation has resulted in severe overcrowding due to limited space and inadequate infrastructure. Hon. Thomas expressed hope that his communication would receive serious consideration from his colleagues as part of their constitutional oversight responsibilities.
“I am hoping this communication will be given full attention by my honorable colleagues as we continue to exercise our oversight responsibilities as the people’s Deputies,” he said. Following deliberations, the communication was forwarded to the relevant committees of the House for detailed review and recommendations ahead of further legislative action instructing committee on Health, ways Means and Finance and Judiciary to carefully act.
