Rep Anthony Williams Introduces Bill to Exempt Employees Earning $500U.S. and Below from Paying Personal Income Taxes.

Maryland County Electoral district #2 Representative Anthony Williams has submitted a Bill seeking to exempt all employees earning five hundred United States dollars (US$500) and below from the paying personal income taxes.

According to the Maryland County lawmaker, the measure is intended to provide relief to ordinary Liberian workers amid prevailing economic challenges. The Bill, titled “An Act to Amend and Restate Sections 16, 200, 201, and 205 of the Consolidated Tax Amendments to the Revenue Code of Liberia (2000), as amended, to Adjust Personal Income Tax Thresholds and Reform the Investment Incentive Regime,” is aimed at modernizing Liberia’s tax framework.

Presenting the Bill, Hon. Williams stressed that the proposed legislation seeks to exempt all employees earning five hundred United States dollars (US$500) and below from the payment of personal income taxes

According to Hon. Williams, any potential revenue shortfall resulting from the increased tax exemption threshold will be offset by the suspension and rationalization of certain incentives and tax waivers currently granted to investors and other private sector entities.

“This reform will help balance revenue generation with social equity while promoting sustainable economic growth,” he told Plenary. Plenary subsequently agreed to forward the Bill to the relevant committee for detailed scrutiny, engagement, and recommendations before it is returned to the full body for legislative action.

The lawmaker is legislative consideration on the reform of personal income tax thresholds and the investment incentive regime.
