Monrovia: A group of rights organizations operating under the banner “We Are Unprotected” on Monday presented a petition to the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Gregory Coleman, calling for justice and stronger action against gender-based violence in Liberia.
The campaigners assembled at the headquarters of the Liberia National Police on Capitol Hill in Monrovia, where they formally submitted the petition to the police authority.
Reading the petition on behalf of the rights groups, activist Nusone Perkins said the coalition is deeply concerned about the increasing cases of violence against women and girls and the need for stronger protection mechanisms.
“We are here today because Liberian women and girls continue to feel unsafe and unprotected,” Perkins said while presenting the petition. “We call on the Liberia National Police and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served in this case and that stronger measures are put in place to address gender-based violence in our country.”
According to the petitioners, the campaign is intended to draw national attention to the urgent need for accountability and reforms within the justice system to ensure survivors of abuse receive protection and support.
Perkins stressed that the coalition expects a swift and transparent investigation into the case that sparked the protest and broader institutional reforms to prevent similar incidents.
“This is not only about one case,” she added. “It is about the safety of all women and girls in Liberia. We want to see a system that responds quickly, fairly, and compassionately when women report violence.”
Receiving the petition, Inspector General Gregory Coleman assured the campaigners that the police would take their concerns seriously and continue to pursue justice.
“We have received your petition and we want to assure you that the Liberia National Police remains committed to investigating this matter thoroughly,” Coleman said. “Justice will be served in this case and in other cases where women and girls have suffered violence.”
He further pledged that the police would continue working with partners and stakeholders to strengthen efforts aimed at protecting women and ensuring perpetrators of violence are held accountable.
The petition forms part of a growing advocacy effort by civil society groups urging the government and law enforcement authorities to intensify the fight against gender-based violence across Liberia.
