WAEC to Release 2026 WASSCE Results by August 14, Dismisses False Social Media Claims

Monrovia, Liberia – August 5, 2026 – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Liberia Office has announced that results for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be officially released on or before August 14, 2026, while dismissing reports circulating on social media as false and misleading.
Providing an update during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Mr. Dale Gbotoe said the Council was compelled to address misinformation claiming that more than 620,000 candidates’ results have been withheld, describing the report as inaccurate and inconsistent with the actual number of students who sat this year’s examination.
“We are pleased to inform the public that we are ready to officially release the 2026 examination results on or before August 14. The information circulating that over 620,000 candidates’ results have been withheld is false because we did not even have that number of candidates taking the examination,” Gbotoe said.
According to WAEC, the 2026 WASSCE was administered from April 27 to June 19, with 1,126 senior high schools presenting candidates for the examination. Of that number, two schools were from the Republic of Guinea, where students follow the Liberian National Curriculum and have been participating in the examination since 2023.
He disclosed that 57,301 candidates registered for this year’s examination, while slightly fewer eventually sat the tests. Officials stressed that the figures make it impossible for the Council to have withheld hundreds of thousands of results as claimed in the online report.
Head of WAEC also revealed that the Government of Liberia fully paid the examination fees for all eligible candidates who sat this year’s WASSCE, a move the Council praised as a significant investment in the country’s education sector.
“We want to appreciate the Government of Liberia for paying the examination fees in full for all the candidates. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting our students and improving access to education,” he stated.
Additionally, Gbotoe announced that 2026 marked the first time school candidates in Liberia were given the opportunity to sit technical and vocational education subjects as part of the national examination, with students from selected schools taking advantage of the new initiative.
WAEC boss said it intends to engage the source of the false publication to determine how the misleading information was generated, while urging the public to rely only on official WAEC communications regarding examination results.
