WONGOSOL, Partners Trains Government Stakeholders In Gender-Sensitive Governance and Policy

Monrovia: The Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia in collaboration with Medica Liberia, Radical Young Women, Sisters for Sisters, and the Liberian Feminist Forum, have launched a three-day training for Government employees as part of efforts to empower policymakers with the knowledge and skills needed to integrate feminist and gender-specific analysis into legislative processes,

The training seeks to equip over 20 government representatives, including lawmakers, with the tools necessary to apply gender-sensitive and feminist perspectives in legislation and public policy.

The initiative is designed to promote the development and implementation of equitable laws and governance systems that reflect the realities and needs of women and marginalized groups

Conducted under the “Stronger Together Project”, The project aims to strengthen Liberia’s feminist movement and drive structural, political, and social change towards greater gender equality, operated by a coalition of more than five women-led organizations.

Held in in Congo Town,  the training brought together key representatives from government ministries and agencies, Legislators, and the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia. Other institutions included the Ministries of Defense, Information, Gender, Justice, Health, among others.

Giving an overview of the training, Madam Munah Kieh Kelly the Membership Coordinator of WONGOSOL emphasized the importance of engaging public officials to identify gender gaps and work collectively toward practical and sustainable solutions. “The three-day sessions will focus on the feminist and gender analyses, legal framework providing practical tools to support gender responsive policymaking”

According to Madam Kelly, “The purpose of this training is to empower, provide the knowledge to policymakers to integrate gender specific issues into policy reform. Participants are engaged in in-depth discussions and presentations on topics such as, the national budget through a gender lens, gender-specific analysis in legislation, core gender concepts and inclusive governance as well as addressing gender disparities in the legal system”.

Speaking at the event, Representative Ellen Attoh-Wreh, Chairperson of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia, highlighted the importance of collaboration between civil society actors and the Caucus. According to Rep. Wreh, the Legislature can only propose effective legislation for women when they are aware of the real challenges faced in communities. She called for sustained engagement between civil society organizations and lawmakers. “Based on the collaboration that’s how we are able to make proper laws and to also lobby with our male colleagues to see how we can make it pass”.

She added “We are open to working with you as a partner to ensure that we get what we want at the end of the day”.  Rep. Wreh reaffirmed the Women’s Legislative Caucus’ commitment to partnering with feminist organizations across Liberia to ensure that gender equality remains a national priority.
