World Bank Country Manager to Visit Beneficiaries of Liberia Women Empowerment Project in Rural Montserrado

Monrovia: The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), and the Service Providers of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), are set to meet World Bank Country Manager, Georgia Wallen.

The field mission will highlight the progress of women-led businesses and Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLAs) that recently received support under LWEP’s Economic Support and Livelihood Grant program.

These grants are helping women expand small businesses, improve their incomes, and create better opportunities for their families. The day’s agenda will include community presentations, discussions with beneficiaries, and site visits to projects already making a difference in the lives of women in; Zannah Town, Careysburg, and surrounding communities.

Groups expected to be showcased include God Is with Us VSLAs #1 and #2, Loyalty Saving and Loan Association, Eat Some and Keep Some, Willekemah VSLA, and individual enterprises such as the Fatu Kolleh Business Center, Jessica Business Center, Kabbah Akoi Business Center, and Masue Business Center.


Speaking ahead of the visit, the Honorable, Atty. Laura Golakeh, Deputy Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection and LWEP Project Coordinator noted:

“This is an opportunity for the World Bank to meet the women whose hard work and determination are changing their families’ futures. We are proud to stand with them and to show the progress being made.”

The Liberia Women Empowerment Project, with support from the World Bank, is reaching thousands of women across six counties. By supporting women-owned businesses and strengthening community accountability, the project is laying the foundation for long-term change.


LWEP is a US$44.6 million initiative funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection through national and international partners. Its mandate is to fulfill the government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development by promoting inclusive, gender-responsive growth and strengthening the agency and resilience of Liberian women and girls.


The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to creating an enabling environment for collaboration, and to ensuring that Liberia delivers on its national and global commitments to gender equality and women’s rights.

The event will be held in Zannah Town, Todee District, Montserrado County on September 26, 2025.
