Monrovia: The Managing Director of the National Housing Authority (NHA), Hon. Florence K. Geebae, has disclosed that about 70 percent of Liberia’s population currently lives in slum communities, highlighting the country’s growing housing crisis.
Hon. Geebae made the revelation while speaking at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing, where she addressed journalists on the challenges of urban overcrowding, particularly in Monrovia.
According to her, the level of overcrowding in Monrovia has reached an alarming stage, largely due to inadequate housing infrastructure. She explained that this situation has compelled the NHA to develop strategic housing plans aimed at reducing slum settlements and improving living conditions across the country.
The NHA Managing Director revealed that the Authority plans to construct 6,000 housing units across five counties, with approximately 5,000 acres of land allocated in each county for the project.
She noted that the initiative is expected to create about 3,000 indirect jobs for Liberians with various skills within the host counties.
However, Hon. Geebae emphasized that the project is still at its early stage, as funding has not yet been secured. “With this plan, we have not generated any funds yet, and we are looking up to the government for support,” she stressed.
She further stated that the housing initiative will not only provide shelter but also improve access to basic social services, including clean water systems, electricity, road networks, and other essential infrastructure within the proposed housing communities.
Hon. Geebae also outlined her 2030 vision for the National Housing Authority, stating that her goal is to ensure that houses are constructed in proper and planned locations, rather than in unsafe and unsuitable areas. “We don’t want to see Liberians continually building anywhere and anyhow” she emphasized.
Additionally, she disclosed that the NHA has already received significant interest and support, with over 105 government ministries, agencies, and private institutions expressing willingness to partner with the Authority to address Liberia’s housing challenges.
The NHA boss reaffirmed her commitment to working with the government and development partners to provide safe, affordable, and sustainable housing for Liberians.
