After 35 Years, Liberia Reopens Embassy in India
NEW DELHI, INDIA | August 13, 2026 — After more than 35 years without a resident diplomatic mission in India, the Republic of Liberia has officially reopened its Embassy in New Delhi, marking a major milestone in Liberia–India relations and the restoration of Liberia’s diplomatic presence in one of its most important partners in Asia.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, is currently in New Delhi to formally inaugurate the Embassy on behalf of His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the Government, and people of Liberia.
Liberia’s Embassy in India has been closed for more than 35 years amid geopolitical challenges confronting the country at the time. The Embassy was shutdown between 1990-1991 due to the 14 years of civil war in Liberia that contributed to economic decline and political instability .
Since regaining peace and stability, other successful administrations have sought to reestablish a resident diplomatic mission in India, recognizing the growing importance of the relationship between the two countries, but didn’t yield result.
Liberian students in the South-Asian country have on several occasions called for Liberia’s residency in India as many of the country’s citizens continue to pursuit higher education in Asia.
According to a Release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the reopening of the Embassy is at the result of multiple efforts spanning from several administrations that have been finalized by the government of President Joseph Boakai.
Speaking ahead of the inauguration, Minister Nyanti described the reopening as both a diplomatic achievement and an important step toward delivering practical benefits for Liberians.
“After more than three decades, Liberia once again has a permanent diplomatic home in India. This is a major milestone for our country and a testament to President Boakai’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s global partnerships and ensuring that our diplomacy delivers tangible results for our people. We acknowledge the efforts of successive administrations that worked toward this goal, and today we are proud to finally bring it to fruition.”
The Ministry said, the reopening is particularly significant given the large and growing number of Liberian students pursuing education and professional training in India, as well as Liberians traveling to India for medical treatment. A resident Embassy will provide stronger consular support and direct assistance to Liberian citizens while expanding opportunities for scholarships, education, healthcare and capacity building.
Beyond consular services, the Embassy will serve as Liberia’s principal diplomatic and economic platform in India, working to attract investment, facilitate trade and private-sector partnerships, deepen cooperation in agriculture, technology, infrastructure and healthcare, and mobilize technical and development assistance. These priorities build on the Embassy’s broader mandate to advance Liberia’s economic diplomacy and national development objectives.
India remains an important development and economic partner to Liberia, with cooperation spanning education, health, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, capacity building, trade and private-sector development.
Meanwhile, Government of Liberia has expressed its appreciation to the Government of India for its cooperation and support in facilitating the establishment of the Embassy and looks forward to this new chapter in Liberia–India relations.
