Monrovia: The Congress for Democratic Change has formally alerted the National Election Commission of its Temporary Party Headquarters Following the Demolition of its National Headquarters in Congo Town

In a communication to the National Election Commission and signed by chairman, Atty Janga Kowo , the CDC noted  “I present compliments of the CDC and wish to inform you of the demolition of the CDC National Headquarters in Congo Town while we still had an appeal in a case for specific performance for the purchase of the property pending at the supremecourt

According to the party’s chairman, the timing of the demolition of the headquarters on the eve of the NEC annual inspection of political party’s headquarters is concerning as “this could be a plot to affect out legal standing as a political party in Liberia”

CDC said the party Headquarters was demolished despite an ongoing appeal at the Supreme Court regarding ownership of the property, a move the party considers violation of Article 20 of the Liberian Constitution and Chapter 51 of the Civil Procedure Law which they believe undermined the legal status of the case ahead of the NEC’s annual inspection of political parties.

“In view of the prevailing situation we are designating district #8 as our temporary headquarters while we await the outcome of adjudication of our appeals at the supreme court

Prior to the evasion and demolition announcement CDC in a bold response, expressed strong opposition to the invasion of its National Headquarters as there was an announce planned meeting on the particular day of the demolition following court notice.

Social media reports indicated that several CDC members were issued warrant by law enforcement to cooperate with the order but CDC reiterated its unwavering commitment to the rule of law, affirming that it will not succumb to intimidation or harassment from the Liberian government denouncing the Planned Court Invasion order and condemned any attempts by the government to interfere with the judicial processes.

However, the evasion and demolition was carried out peacefully by court officers alongside law enforcement officers.

Following the evasion and demolition of its headquarters, former President George Weah said “Fellow partisans of the Coalition for Democratic Change, today we witnessed yet another testament of the Unity Party government gross disregard for the rule of law. Emboldened by impunity, they continue to abuse power, testing our nation’s fragile peace and democracy.

He added “Their list of violations grows daily from police brutality against ordinary citizens to outright disregard of court orders, we must, however, take the high road. In the interest of peaceful coexistence, I urge everyone to remain calm, law-abiding, and respectful of due process, despite this partisan political mischief from the Unity Party government”.

According to him, In the legal battle over the ownership of the CDC headquarters, the party has always followed the rule of law and openly stated its willingness to abide by the court’s final ruling, regardless of the outcome.
