EPA VALIDATES LIBERIA’S NDC 3.0

Buchanan, Grand Bassa: The Government of Liberia through the Environmental Protection Agency has begun a two-day technical workshop aimed at validating Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contributions, NDC 3.0
The main objective of the technical workshop was aimed at providing a platform for stakeholders to review and update Liberia’s NDC 2.0 in line with the latest climate action and policy developments. At the end of the workshop, stakeholders will have a clear understanding of key updates needed for Liberia’s NDC 3.0 and a roadmap for finalizing and submitting the updated NDC.
The workshop fostered collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders, leading to a more robust and ambitious NDC. It is designed for representatives from the current NDCs Government ministries which comprise of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Mines and Energy, National Aquaculture and Fishery Authority, Ministry of Health/National Public Health Institute of Liberia and Ministry of Commerce.
Dweh Boley who proxy for Executive Director of EPA, Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, thanked the current nine NDC Government ministries for turning up in their numbers and urged them to engage in an interactive exchange for the betterment of Liberia.
He echoed that the gathering is the first technical workshop on Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contributions, NDC 3.0 describing it as a new chapter in the nation climate action portfolio acknowledging that the NDCs is the central tool that reflects the country’s commitment in addressing climate change and its impact on the environment
For his part, Daniel Koikoi, Assistant Foreign Minister, thanked the EPA and partners for organizing the workshop and appreciated Foreign Minister Sara Beslow Nyanti for giving him the opportunity to represent the ministry in such an occasion.
Koikoi, a former officer on foreign affairs at the EPA assured him his readiness to effectively participate in the workshop and noted that it was an honor to come back and interact with people in advancing climate related issues and will help implement environmental diplomacy.
Liberia pledged to reduce its economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 64% below business-as-usual levels by 2030 with a long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, conditional upon international support. In 2024, the Government of Liberia through the Environmental Protection Agency and with support from the United Nations Development Programmer (UNDP)-through its Climate Promise supported the government of Liberia to conduct a stock-take of the NDC 2.0.
The report from the stock-take process revealed that Liberia’s has achieved emission reduction from the three highest emitting sectors, Energy, Forestry, and Transport which account for the avoided GHG emission per year by 848.34 Gg CO2e. Or 20.47 percent of GHG reduction from 2021 to 2024.
Now that Liberia is in the process of developing its NDC 3.0 with reflection from the global stock-take, the in-country NDC stock-take, and the latest developments in climate action and Liberia’s National Development plan, which is the Arrest Agenda for Inclusive Development, AAID. To support this effort, the technical workshop has brought together key stakeholders and experts to look in depth in Liberia’s NDC 2.0 implementation progress to enable the country to develop its NDC 3.0
