Gbarnga-Salayea Road Opens New Economic Pathway, as Liberia-China Partnership Reaches New Milestone

Lofa, July 30, 2026 — For communities along Liberia’s Northern Corridor, the opening of the Gbarnga-Salayea Road represents more than a new stretch of pavement; it signals renewed hope for easier movement, stronger trade links, and greater economic opportunities.
The 81-kilometer road project, officially dedicated Tuesday, July 28, 2026, is expected to improve transportation between Bong and Lofa Counties while supporting agricultural activities, commerce, and access to markets for thousands of Liberians.
Speaking at the dedication ceremony in Lofa County, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu described the project as a significant contribution to Liberia’s economic and social development, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure in transforming communities.
“Better roads improve connectivity, facilitate trade, lower transportation costs, expand access to markets, create jobs, and make people’s daily lives easier,” Ambassador Yin said.
He noted that the Gbarnga-Salayea Road forms an important part of Liberia’s Northern Corridor and will serve as a key transportation link for the country.
According to the Chinese Ambassador the completion of the road demonstrates the continued cooperation between Liberia and China, particularly in infrastructure development.
The project was executed by China Henan International Cooperation Group (CHICO) after being awarded through Liberia’s public procurement process.
Ambassador Yin praised the collaboration between Chinese and Liberian workers, engineers, and subcontractors, saying their partnership contributed to the successful completion of the project.
He also linked the project to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, outlining that the dedication reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting economic growth.
“This event reflects the Liberian Government’s strong commitment to improving infrastructure, promoting economic development, and enhancing the well-being of the Liberian people,” he said.
The ambassador further described the road as another example of the growing strategic partnership between Liberia and China, following the 2024 meeting between President Boakai and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing.
He reaffirmed Chinas’ commitment to encouraging more investment and cooperation in Liberia, including projects that create jobs, transfer skills, and contribute to sustainable development.
Reflecting on the importance of infrastructure, Ambassador Yin referenced a Chinese saying: “If you want to get rich, build roads first.”
Meanwhile, the Ambassador expressed hope that the Gbarnga-Salayea Road would become not only a route for transportation, but also “a road of opportunity and shared prosperity” for Liberians.
For residents and businesses along the corridor, the completion of the project is expected to reduce transportation challenges and provide new opportunities for farmers, traders, and communities that depend on reliable road networks to connect their products and services to larger markets.
