Monrovia: The National Elections Commission has officially authorized the Proposed People’s Action Party (PAP), led by Montserrado County Senator Saah Joseph, to proceed with its first national convention as part of the process to becoming a fully registered political party in Liberia.

In a communication addressed to Mr. Ahmed K. Sirleaf, Chairperson of the PAP Organizing Committee, the NEC confirmed that the proposed party has met the preliminary requirements set forth under Liberian electoral law for the registration of political parties, alliances, and coalitions.

“The Commission authorizes you to take the proposed party to its first national convention no later than six (6) months upon receipt of this communication,” the letter stated. The NEC added “This authorization aligns with Section 7.1 of its Regulations and Procedures, which governs the registration of political entities in Liberia.

According to the Commission, the upcoming convention will enable the PAP to adopt its constitution and by-laws, and elect its officials in accordance with Article 79 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.

The letter further explained that once the PAP successfully conducts its convention and satisfies all outstanding requirements, it will be granted a formal certificate as a registered political party in Liberia.

The People’s Action Party, with Senator Saah Joseph as its Political Leader, is among Liberia’s emerging political institutions seeking to expand the democratic space and provide new leadership alternatives ahead of future elections.

Political observers say the NEC’s authorization marks a significant step for Senator Joseph and his team as they move toward formalizing the PAP’s political presence and engaging the electorate on national issues.
