NEC Launches Regional Media-Elections Training For Stronger Partnership With Journalists To Increased Voter Awareness

Ganta, Nimba County: The National Elections Commission has launched is Phase one Regional Media-Elections training in Ganta Nimba County to build a Stronger Partnership for Journalists to Increased voter awareness.
With theme ‘Strengthening Media and Electoral Integrity,’ the Commission has renewed it assurances that it will continue to strengthen collaboration with the media as part of broader efforts to enhance the integrity, transparency, and inclusiveness of Liberia’s electoral processes.
NEC recognized the media as a critical stakeholder in the electoral process, given its important role in shaping public perception, disseminating electoral information, promoting accountability, and increasing citizen participation in democratic processes.
Delivering the opening statement, NEC Executive Director and Head of Secretariat, Mr. Anthony K. Sengbe, disclosed that the workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to review the Commission’s draft Communications Strategy, Policy and Protocols, while also strengthening cooperation between electoral stakeholders and media practitioners ahead of future electoral activities.
Mr. Sengbe identified misinformation, limited public understanding of electoral processes, and weak coordination between the Commission and the media as key challenges that could undermine public confidence and electoral stability if left unaddressed.
Also speaking at the opening ceremony, James Kpargoi, Communications Specialist of the United Nations Development Programme’s Liberia Electoral Support Project (UNDP-LESP), encouraged participants to make meaningful contributions to the development of the communications framework and build on previous efforts by partners to improve public communication and stakeholder engagement at the NEC.
Meanwhile, Julius Julius Kullie Kanubah, President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), along with representatives of partner institutions, including Internews, Local Voices Liberia, the Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FEJAL), and the Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding (CEMESP), called for greater support to ensure effective and professional media coverage of electoral processes across the country.
The three-day workshop has brought together approximately 14 journalists representing community radio stations and other media institutions from eight counties, as well as ten NEC Election Magistrates.Implemented by the NEC Communications Section through the UNDP Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP) with funding support from the European Union in Liberia, the workshop covers a range of topics, including media literacy, media mapping, accreditation procedures, the legal framework governing media and elections, democracy and press freedom, combating misinformation and disinformation, and promoting responsible election reporting.
At the conclusion of the workshop, media participants are expected to adopt and sign a communiqué reaffirming their collective commitment to increasing public awareness of key electoral activities, including citizens’ right to vote, civic participation, and broader engagement in the democratic process.
Meanwhile, Phase Two of the Regional Media-Elections Workshop is scheduled for 17–19 June 2026 in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, where another group of media managers, editors, and key stakeholders will convene to continue discussions on strengthening media engagement and electoral integrity.
