Monrovia: The President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, has mandated the Secretary of the Senate to communicate with the Board of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to halt its newly nominated Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed M. Sheriff, from taking office until he is confirmed by the Liberian Senate.
The President Pro Tempore’s decision was triggered by concerns raised by Bomi County Senator, Edwin M. Snowe, informing Plenary that the newly nominated Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed M. Sheriff is about to take office without being confirmed by the Senate.
Senator Snowe further informed Plenary that the nomination letter clearly states that the “Managing Director” should take office with immediate effect, something which undermines Article 54 of the Constitution of Liberia that states, “The President shall nominate and with the consent of the Senate appoint and Commission.”
In a related development, the Plenary of the Senate has at the same time mandated the Director General of the General Services Agency (GSA) to do a clarification in the print and electronic media on “his proposal for an increase in the purchase of vehicles for senior officials of government from US$45,000 to US$65,000”.
The decision was based on a report from the Senate’s Committee on Autonomous Commissions and Agencies.
