Zoweinta, Bong County: After years of struggling with water scarcity and unreliable hand pumps, residents of Zoweinta City in Bong County are finally seeing relief as a US$44,000 pipe-borne water system nears full completion.
Already, more than 70 homes have been connected to the system, marking a major milestone in the community’s access to clean and safe drinking water.
The project, spearheaded by Representative Prince K. Koinah of Bong County District #1, was launched on November 29, 2024, with support from House Speaker Richard Nangbe Koon and other lawmakers.
Now 99.9% complete, the system is already in use and has been widely welcomed by residents. “For the first time, people can open a tap at home and access water anytime, even at night,” said James Yekerson Forkpah, Special Assistant to Rep. Koinah.
“This project is already transforming lives.” In addition to household connections, six public water stations with multiple faucets have been installed, while government-run facilities like the Zoweinta Clinic and maternal health center have been connected free of charge.
The solar-powered system includes two 1,000-gallon poly tanks and is designed to provide a consistent supply of over 800 gallons at a time. It operates using 27 solar panels and heavy-duty batteries, ensuring water flow even during power outages.
Forkpah stressed the project’s long-term durability, noting that it is expected to last up to 30 years with proper maintenance. The system builds on a previous, smaller-scale water project completed by Rep. Koinah in David Dean Town.
Though the official dedication is set for November 1, 2025, residents have already begun using the service. Community members and radio callers have expressed gratitude, hailing the initiative as a major step forward for sanitation and health, and urging other lawmakers to follow Koinah’s example. “This isn’t just politics,” Forkpah said. “It’s a real solution to a real problem.”
