Liberia Settles Deficits at ECOWAS, Gets Support for Non-Permanent Seat at United Nations

Liberia has settled its deficits obligation to Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

According to Bomi County Senator and head of Liberia’s delegation Edwin Snowe informed members of the Liberian Senate that Liberia recently that GOL is done with its fanatical settlement at (ECOWAS) and praised the Government for committing and honoring previous agreement signed with international body to clears arrears accumulated from past administration confirming that Liberia is up to date with month-to-month payment.

Though he didn’t mention the amount of arrears in question but applauded the government of Liberia for saving the nation’s image at EOWAS. “We want to inform you that Liberia to date, on a month-to-month basis is current with the payment of ECOWAS defects. there were areas from the past and Liberia had signed an MOU with ECOWAS to pay the arrears that accumulated from the past.

We want to thank the Liberian government for rescuing Liberia at ECOWAS” he said. In a related development, the Liberia’s Parliament Chairman has also acknowledged the full support of the Parliament for Liberia’s bid in securing a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.

He said, ECOWAS as an Institution will be voting as a bloc for the space in the UN, as such, the body has endorsed Liberia the position at the United Nations. “ECOWAS has endorsed Liberia candidacy at the United Nations seat. And Liberia has the full support of ECOWAS; no individual member can take away because ECOWAS will be voting as a bloc”.

Liberia is a member of the United Nations. It is currently seeking a non-permanent seat at the Un Security Council. A non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council offers a country several benefits including increased international influence, creates a platform to advocate for their interests and access to valuable information.

Furthermore, in respect to the Country’s request for WCOWAS to establish one of its Institutions in Liberia, Senator Snowe said the delegation visited the nation two weeks ago to assess the possibility of establishing such entity in Liberia.

The Bomi lawmaker recognized the competition of other nations to secure the bid but reaffirmed the delegation’s interest to continuously push the case for Liberia. “We also want to inform you that ECOWAS sent a delegation here two weeks ago on the possibility of establishing an ECOWAS institution in Liberia. Those positions are heavily contested. Ghana, Code de Voire, Benni, Senegal, Guinea Bissau have put in a very pressing bidding but the biggest argument at this point is Liberia is the only ECOWAS member state that is not hosting an ECOWAS institution.

And we will continue to make that case”. Meanwhile, Senator Snowe told Plenary that he has formally communicated with the leadership of the ECOWAS Parliament that the impasse at the House Representative have been resolved, and the House has elected Hon. Richard Koon as Speaker of the Legislature.
